Mountain Leader Two-Day Masterclasses in the Lake District

There are many reasons why you might feel the need for a refresher before you undertake your assessment. Maybe it's quite a few years since you did your training course, and you could really do with a reminder. Or perhaps you've already done your assessment, but you were deferred on one aspect of the syllabus. Or you pass the assessment some years ago and feel the need to sharpen your skills.

This two-day course will cover the following areas:
~ navigation on different scales of map, in good visibility, poor visibility and/or at night
~ steep ground work
~ wild camping
~ anything else the participants want to cover

Here's the outline programme - this could change according to the weather and the needs of the participants:
Day 1
Meet at 9am at the top of Wrynose Pass. Steep ground rope work first, then leave ropes etc in the cars. After a day in the mountains, descend to the Red Tarn area to make camp, have a rest until it is dark, then do a couple of hours of night navigation.
Day 2
Walk out from the camp, drive round to Langdale, and meet at 9am in the Stickle Ghyll car park. This will be a much shorter day.

Dates: check out the online calendar for dates and availability.

What do our clients say about us?

The enquiry & booking procedure was excellent, quick and helpful feedback guiding me through the process and sorting any issues out immediately. The course programme was excellent, covered everything and taking as much time as was needed on each area. Chris is very experienced and pitched the course at the correct level for all participants. Really made everybody enjoy the experience. I initially contacted another provider for the ML assessment. But a recommendation from a friend and a refresher course help make the choice.

The joining instructions and information sent out at time of booking were very clear and comprehensive. Any time I have emailed additional queries Anne has always replied quickly with everything I need. Chris's experience shows in his instruction. There's never any doubt or ambiguity in what he tells you, which instills confidence. He'll explore or talk about whatever you bring up but never gets distracted from the objectives of the day. Even though he's delivering courses or instruction he's done hundreds of times and to many clients, Chris recognises it may be the first time for the client and makes sure he covers everything they need with enthusiasm and patience.

Alex was a fantastic tutor, he worked hard to put three very nervous clients at ease and we all learned a lot and came away feeling better prepared for assessment. Alex very quickly identified that my major issue was my eyesight and a specific problem with refocusing on the fine detail on the map after looking at the land. I now feel I can concentrate on finding the solution to this problem before my reassesment and things will work a lot better. He really restored my confidence in my actual navigation ability. He also introduced me to the 1:25000 OS Dinky map which I found much clearer than the OS Explorer.

Alex came across in a friendly and relaxed way of instructing, 10/10, excellent instructor.
Steve Begley, August 2023

Alex was very knowledgeable and able to adapt the programme to meet each participants needs. I finished the course with improved confidence and a clearer picture of my own strengths and weaknesses.
