Mountain Leader training

All of the instructors have been exceptional. It was a really enjoyable relaxed atmosphere. Just enough info was given along the way without info overload.
Sammi House, February 2010

The week was one of incredible highs and lows and with an intensity that kept the adrenaline high all week. I can honestly say that the training and the assessment weeks were without doubt the most powerful two weeks of training and personal development that I have experienced in over 30 years of working with many of the top worldwide organisations in the global automotive industry. The level of knowledge, understanding, support and challenge from the trainers made me want to achieve the ML award even more than I did originally. You have all helped me become a more proficient mountain leader and have facilitated me in learning new skills, and then using them in the hills in a safe, dynamic way.
Malcolm Wade, training June 2011, assessment October 2011

Course was fab. Exceeded my expectations. Experience of instructors was invaluable. Thank you.
Paul Gubbins, October 2012

Chris is awesome!
Tom Reader, June 2015

Just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for planting the seeds of how to walk and move better particularly on broken ground on ML training and assessment. This week I've been working a group of mainly older retired people (one was 84!) who wanted to go up Scafell via Lord's Rake, a trip very very much on the top end of most people's confidence. Being able to model good movement on previous days and then coach them on how to move around on scree and broken ground turned what could of been an ordeal of a day for some into a challenging but enjoyable and rewarding one. Made me realise how grateful I am for someone showing me that and how cool it is when it goes full circle and get can pass it on so thank you!
Beth Wallis, training 2011, assessment 2012, feedback received May 2016

Thanks again for a fantastic 6 days in the fells on MLA training, I had a great time. I was both mentally and physically exhausted by the time I got home, but learnt loads! Your attention to detail and commitment to training us was much appreciated. I’ve hopefully taken on board all the advice and guidance you gave and plan to put into practise these new skills shortly. I very much look forward to the assessment in 2017.
Andy Hope, August 2016

Chris took us beyond the syllabus where he felt that we would become better leaders if we did so - this is very much appreciated and led to a much more engaging experience. It was great not to have a box ticking exercise, and to have something that reflected the nature of the group. Chris is clearly a highly intelligent, knowledgeable, and experienced instructor. His ability to engage with people is truly excellent - I am so glad that I chose to take this course with him. Esther was a superb additional trainer and complemented Chris well with her approach and knowledge.
Alex Massie, August 2016

Each day whilst on the course we received regular de-briefs and had the opportunity to ask questions and take notes about areas we had covered. Chris was very patient with each candidate and also took time to pass on his wide knowledge of the mountains, terrain, flora and fauna and other interesting and related information.  Chris has a mind of knowledge and wisdom, overspilling with enthusiasm for his love of the mountains and everything around them, which actually rubbed off on all of us. Very professional indeed. Research was enough to convince me that Chris would be a brilliant guide, hence me wanting to do my assessment with him if this proves possible. Just had a great week and although I consider myself to be relatively experienced in the mountains, learnt so much from Chris and Esther.
Chris Godridge, August 2016

Thank you for an awesome few days training!
Tilly Cottrell, January 2018

Booking procedure was efficient and straightforward. Enquiries were responded to promptly. The additional information provided was really useful e.g. the kit list. The programme was well thought out to match the group and weather conditions. Our instructors Chris and John had different but complimentary styles, both were really clear, supportive and helpful. I was looking for a provider in the Lakes but I chose Chris because I was impressed with the website containing lots of supporting information and with the positive testimonials. I love learning new things and I found a lot to learn! Chris was a supportive, knowledgeable and inspiring instructor. He didn't stick solely to the curriculum, adding in lots of additional skills along the way. I found his emphasis on 'movement' particularly fascinating and rewarding. I now feel really motivated to consolidate my learning and tackle the ML assessment.
Mick Loftus, January 2018

Really challenging but good programme covering a lot of different areas. Learnt many new skills in areas I wasn't familiar with. Programme allows you to be involved from the very beginning and it very much 'hands on'. Great mix of practical and theory based learning. The guides we had over the week were excellent, very knowledgable in all areas. Willing to spend extra time with any areas you needed extra help with. All had different teaching styles which worked well. Changed the course programme when needed (due to weather) and still covered all the relevant materials. Made sure you were consistently learning but done in a friendly atmosphere.
Craig Mordue, March 2018

Easy booking and great communication before the course. Prompt response to emails. Both Chris and Simon were great instructors. They were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, great teachers and very approachable. They have got years of valuable experience and exude their passion for the mountains. A really enjoyable week. I learnt new skills, learnt my strengths and weaknesses and had fun. I have come away with an action plan to turn my weaknesses into strengths and am looking forward to consolidating my skills before assessment.
Lucy Foster, August 2018

Thanks for a great week! Your website has loads of useful and interesting information that was helpful for my preparation. And I appreciated the prompt confirmation email when you received my payment. The river crossing was a highlight for me because it was really fun. The search and rescue scenario was good because it was quite hard and made me consider what I would do in a real situation. I appreciated all the nav and ropes practice and feel I have a solid theoretical base and am raring to get out and practice more. Chris and Simon were both excellent, knowledgeable and personable guides. We benefited from having both of you as you have different styles that complement one another. I felt encouraged and supported by both when things were hard, and left feeling enthusiastic to get out and practice the skills I learnt. I found it quite hard and it was a steep learning curve, but I am really keen to get out, practice, and get good enough. So thanks for the patience, encouragement and expertise from both Chris and Simon.
Clare Bernstein, August 2018

Originally I was planning to book with Glenmore Lodge, but decided it was out of my price range. As a second choice, I chose to go to the Lakes to be near where my partner works. I chose to go with Chris above other providers in the Lakes because of the central location, and because of lots of very persuasive testimonials on the website! I thought Chris had a good reputation and the people's feedback suggested he would be supportive and really trying to get the best out of people, rather than treating the training as a box-ticking exercise of working through the syllabus. Happy to say they seemed to be right! I want to thank Chris for teaching me about moving on steep ground - I am really aware of the way I move now and I think improving my movement will be fundamental to building my confidence when leading groups. I think the training has really highlighted for me the areas I need to work on and made me keen to get out and practice! I've already recommended the movement masterclass to some of my friends.
Tasmin Fletcher, November 2018

I just wanted to say thank you very much to Chris and yourself for organising and putting on such a fantastic course. Out of all the Mountain Leader courses happening on the dates I looked at I am over the moon that I picked this one. Chris has an incredible enthusiasm for the mountains, people and movement (and even life) which really came across in his teachings. I never expected to learn what I did, and I’m very grateful for that. I will certainly look to book courses with you in the future.
Matt Willkins, May 2019

Clear instructions about what to expect, what to bring and where to meet up, and helpful suggestions on accommodation. The programme was excellent - all the key areas were covered but the vast bulk of the time was on the hill, as it should be, doing practical things. Chris is truly inspirational. It is a pleasure to see how passionate he is at passing on his knowledge and vast experience to others, and he has a great way with people. Simon also was great company and a knowledgeable, skillful and patient teacher.
Richard Archer, May 2019

Anne was extremely informative, helpful and quick in responding to emails. She made the whole process easy and smooth. The programme was hugely enjoyable and I felt I learned a great deal. It really helped me to focus in on the areas I need to work on and made me feel positive that I had the tools to do this. Both Chris and Simon were great instructors with different teaching styles, which was good to experience. The course felt relaxed and comfortable and was a great environment to learn in, where I felt it was okay to make mistakes! Overall a really inspiring experience. Just a massive thank you again to you both, it's been a real pleasure meeting Chris, and thank you to Anne for making the booking process etc run smoothly.
Charlie Starley, May 2019

The training course was outstanding. I knew going in that my key area for improvement was on personal movement on steep ground. In my four days out in the mountains I have had since the course, something has clicked with my movement. Two of my regular hill walking partners both commented on how it seems like I'm just out for a stroll when we're going up (or down) on steep ground- and noted the marked difference in my walking compared to where I was in June and July. I attribute this completely to the time spent on the course on personal movement. There was also a lot of emphasis on the flora in mountainous areas. As someone who grew up in the US, it was so helpful to gain that knowledge and have the repetition of continuously identifying plants whilst on the course. I've already put that knowledge to use when guiding a friend in the hills! The collaborative and friendly ethos that was evident from the website and customer comments resonated with me. I didn't want to be on a training course with a bunch of "climbing bros" in their 20s who would be focused on showing off how much they knew, nor did I want to be on a course that educated with military-style discipline (both of which were experiences of others I had spoken to). Plus I appreciated the fact that I could book my own accommodation, giving me a bit more personal space in the evenings to rest and reflect on what I learned. I feel really lucky to have been on the course with such an amazing group of individuals. We all got along brilliantly, and really supported each other when we were pushed outside of our comfort zone. Chris and Simon did a brilliant job of facilitating a collaborative learning environment, so that we could also teach each other based on our strengths and weaknesses. I have already recommended Chris to a friend of mine who will be taking her ML training in the spring, and I look forward to coming back for my assessment next summer.
Allison Nau, August 2019

Thank you for a fantastic week - the course was way above my expectations. I’ve have honestly learnt more this week than I have from 30 years of bumbling around in the hills. It was fun, challenging, inspiring, and thought-provoking all at the same time.  You and Simon are a great leaders, and a great combination - knowledgeable, friendly, unhurried and mindful of the ability of all the individuals.
Stephen Thorn, August 2019

Really great programme. Well presented and great delivery. Both Esther and Chris inspired confidence and were extremely knowledgeable around all aspects of the ML syllabus. They both brought something different with their own styles and the group appreciated both of them and they had specialisms that inspired the group but never did I feel you would have preferred to have been with one or the other as they were equally professional . They complemented each other. I booked with you as I couldn't get onto a Glenmore Lodgecourse due to timings. I did some research about Chris and it was all good feedback, and now having been I will be booking my assessment with you and feel pleased I couldn't get onto the Glenmore lodge course.
Nick Mardall, November 2019

Both Chris and Esther demonstrated highly perceptive interpersonal skills, skillfully identifying any drop in confidence and adjusting their approach to enable the best possible learning experience. I booked this course because of the first impressions from the company website, and the dates fitted. A great learning experience that has cemented my focus to complete the ML assessment.
Robbo Robinson, November 2019

Mountain Leader assessment

Outstanding. Two vastly experienced but humble trainers. Great chat and banter. Lots of really helpful advice. Progression was spot on.
Jonathan Chuter, May 2009

Has been a pleasure & a privilege to spend a week in the company of two people with such passion and who are so willing to share it with others so generously. Inspiring…
Verran Townsend, May 2009

Thoroughly enjoyed the training last year and couldn’t think of anyone I would rather do the assessment with.
Chris Lodwig, Februay 2010

The week was one of incredible highs and lows and with an intensity that kept the adrenaline high all week. I can honestly say that the training and the assessment weeks were without doubt the most powerful two weeks of training and personal development that I have experienced in over 30 years of working with many of the top worldwide organisations in the global automotive industry. Malcolm Wade, training June 2011, assessment October 2011

When talking to others (who went to different providers) about assessment prior to course, the general consensus was that it was one of the worst/most stressful weeks of their lives. I could not have had a more different experience. I found I was pushed and assessed at a very high standard, however there was no unnecessary pressure put on me and I found the whole week very enjoyable and incredibly inspiring. I think pass or fail I couldn’t have come away without being more confident and enthused. Looking back on this course it didn’t feel like a pressure-fuelled assessment, it felt much more like an enjoyable, inspiring week in the mountains with friends. I couldn’t recommend Chris and his team highly enough.
Graham Simpson, 2012

I had a fantastic week. I learnt loads and had a really enjoyable time. Chris and Jon were always happy to help and answer questions, I think it is brilliant how Chris takes you from whatever stage you are at and pushes you up a notch! Thanks for sorting all the office and admin side out so brilliantly Anne! Made the "scary" ML Assessment an absolute pleasure!
Chris Moore, June 2014

Just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for planting the seeds of how to walk and move better particularly on broken ground on ML training and assessment. This week I've been working a group of mainly older retired people (one was 84!) who wanted to go up Scafell via Lord's Rake, a trip very very much on the top end of most people's confidence. Beth Wallis, training 2011, assessment 2012, feedback received May 2016

Chris definitely put me at ease. I have wanted to do this assessment for so long that I had made myself really nervous. Chris was calm and knowledgeable and helped me feel like I could do it. All the way through he tested us whilst making the assessment enjoyable and memorable. He certainly has a gift for this and I was thrilled that I ended up doing MLA with him. Thank you so much for all of this "little things" that helped develop the big picture....and for putting up with us lot for a week!!
Rhiannon Pritchard, May 2016

Anne is super-organised and her response time is great. Chris's approach works well for me. His attitude of every day is a learning experience inspires confidence and willingness to learn more. From the moment I booked I knew I was in good hands. Organised, friendly and welcoming! Both my training and assessment exceeded my expectations. Chris's wealth of knowledge and experience shows in every situation. My assessment had a relaxed atmosphere that allowed me to perform to a good standard. Thanks again for all of your help and support through training and assessment. I'll be back for more!
Mark Fletcher, September 2017

Perhaps the best of the 14 Mountain Training courses I've now attended. Highly recommended.
Ed Brown, June 2017

I didn't expect to learn so much at assessment - it was so useful. I wish I'd done my training with you too and if I get members of staff wishing to start the process, I'll send them to you.
Ruth Betts, August 2017

In many walks of life we are taught team work, getting the best out of each other as well as supporting, this I think we did. We cant all be leaders all the time and have to recognise each others strengths and use them to bring on each other. Whilst our individual skills were definitely being rigorously assessed, I think Chris allows the other aspects to come through in a fair manner, recognising a team works best together rather than as individuals. This shows experience  and a skill that many do not have when doing assessment or appraisal of individuals working within a team. Others  I know who have gone through the ML assessment in other centres spoke of not being allow to confer, help  on anything and lived 5 days of almost fear. I work in the medical profession and know that this definitely does not bring out the best in teaching and is certainly an antiquated means of assessment particularly when team is so important. I think Chris definitely got the balance correct and would say as such even had I failed. We were rigorously and fairly assessed and I was kept on my toes but more importantly I came away having learnt a lot from both assessor and my now friends on all aspects of the curriculum. This has to be seen as a vital part of the outcome of the week, pass or fail. Many thanks for a really enjoyable week and the knowledge imparted. I can now go down in history as having taught a British Mountain Guide about Black Slugs, unless this was simply a ploy to let me have the upper hand on one occasion.
Alistair Gascoigne, October 2017

Chris was amazing, although this was an assessment course I still learnt so much! Chris has a great reputation in what he does and I had been recommended from a few different people. Take a pen and pad and soak up as much experience as you can! I will definitely be looking at booking onto more of his courses.
Ryan Bond, June 2018

Your website was very good. I got the impression from it that I wouldn’t just be taking the standard Mountain Leader Assessment but would be inspired in other ways too and I was! I learned a lot more even though it was an assessment.
Elizabeth Brown, August 2018

The booking process was easy enough and Anne was extremely efficient at keeping us up to date with information. The course was enjoyable and covered all aspects of the syllabus to be assessed. It was a good programme of events. The three assessors on the course were great to be around and made you feel relaxed, so that it was sometime not obvious you were being assessed! They were great at sharing their depth of knowledge of the mountains.
Sarah Pike, October 2018

I was a last minute addition, you quickly and professionally brought me on board. The programme was excellent - comprehensive, with plenty of space for early assessment flutters, and there was coaching and support of the highest standard throughout. Chris and Simon are highly experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A real privilege to spend some time in the hills with. A great way to finish this part of my Mountain Leader journey, leaving me with a clear action plan as to how to progress. I’ve already recommended you to friends coming up to assessment.
Jan Knight, April 2019

Everything was laid out in a logical way which allowed you to concentrate on what was happening rather than worrying about what might be next. It is a tiring and pretty full on week as it is so the way Chris delivers the assessment is a big help. The instructors made this assessment for me. Their relaxed approach, positive attitudes and wealth of knowledge and experience changed the week from being something I had stressed about and generally dreaded into an enjoyable experience. I had already completed some Masterclasses with Chris and his approach was one I enjoyed. He convinced me to book my assessment sooner, rather than later and it gave me the focus and drive to fully prepare for it. I only wish I'd done my ML training with him too.
Michael Stones, April 2019

I was quite nervous from the beginning and during the course. Thanks Chris and Simon for your patience and making me feel at ease. This finally made me more relaxed so I was able to 'do my thing in the hills' as I normally do.
Jeroen Daams, April 2019

I support all the other reviews - relaxed atmosphere, continued learning, encouraged to think about concrete next steps etc. etc.
Sandra Schmidt, April 2019

Booking was easy and communication was clear, friendly and quick - felt welcome to ask any questions or clarify although I didn't need to as all information was provided. The structure of the course was excellent, with time to settle in and start to feel comfortable on the first day and a balance of demonstrating skills and knowledge with opportunities to learn more and discuss approaches with the assessors and each other. Over the course of the week, although aware I was being observed/assessed to a standard, I felt that the assessment was almost secondary to a valuable learning experience with an emphasis from both assessors on giving us the tools to be the best possible leaders - can't remember the exact quote but both used a phrase along the lines of 'I can pass you at the standard, but I'd rather train you to be excellent' which I think is a wonderful philosophy that made for an excellent week! Chris and Kelvyn were both fantastic - not only obviously highly skilled and experienced but they also worked hard to put us all at ease (as much as possible within an assessment situation!) and ensured we had plenty of opportunities to learn further skills and discuss approaches with them and each other. They clearly both have a passion for teaching and developing people as well as conveying/assessing skills and it was genuinely enjoyable to be out in the hills with them. I can't recommend them both highly enough and got so much out of the week thanks to them, including a better feel for how I can take the next steps forward. Thank you - I came away from the course not just with the achievement of passing a standard but really feeling like I've taken steps towards being the best leader I can be and the confidence to keep progressing, learning and developing!
Jen Brooke, June 2019

Initially my older brother recommended Chris as he completed an ML training course with Chris (about 20 years ago). I also had recommendations from friends who had completed masterclass courses with Chris. Another reason for booking with you is I really like your website - it has a warm look and feel and is inspiring too. I especially like the 'Five Quick Things' - which are fantastic reads and I look forward to receiving them! I can appreciate the research and effort that goes into producing such pieces. Anne and Chris have a great partnership - I found everything from the booking process to the assessment itself - seamless. They provide a relaxed learning environment especially as assessments are daunting and stressful. What a journey I've had and you made it an enjoyable, unforgettable learning experience. Thank you both.
Jo Whiston, August 2019

I completed my training with you and felt very comfortable with your training style and learnt so much from you that I felt completing my assessment with you would be really beneficial.
Louise Hemingway, October 2019

All the information provided was relevant and extremely helpful. I felt much more confident by the end of the assessment thanks to the expertise of the assessors. They were very thorough and very fair. I was pushed to my limit especially on the steep ground day. I had undertaken my training with Chris so it made sense to go back and do my assessment with him. A fabulous week - I could have stayed another week for more of the same. I feel ready for anything now.
Susan Uttley, October 2019

Mountain Leader reassessments

Booking was easy with full discussion of my needs, and backed up with informative emails. The area used, timing and distance covered was just right with all of the key features that were needed. Plenty of stops for discussion and Chris's helpful input. Chris was friendly and informative and gave lots of positive reinforcement and additional input. Thank you for your help and a very informative and enjoyable day.
Ken Morton, 1:1 Mountain Leader reassessment day, March 2016

I had to cancel the first time due to last minute work situation and Chris and Anne were very accommodating and were happy for me to let them know when I would next be free. Very good service. Chris is very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though it was an assessment he made me feel at ease and made it an enjoyable process. I chose Chris as he is a Guide, already has good reviews and he was also available for the dates I needed. I will definitely book again for any further courses or guiding requirements.
Paul Harrison, 1:1 Mountain Leader reassessment day, May 2018

I have been on the Contour Masterclass and the Mountain Leader Steep Ground Masterclass with Chris, and I found his teaching techniques outstanding compared to other course providers I have used. Chris takes his teaching to the next level within the mountaineering world. Chris and Anne are a great team providing some of the best mountaineering experiences in the UK.
Mike Hide,
1:1 Mountain Leader reassessment day, April 2019

I booked with Chris because of respect for him, and trust in a fair and objective judgement.
Stuart Bratton, October 2019

Contour Masterclasses

I thoroughly enjoyed my day. Chris has years of knowledge to impart. He has an easy going yet clear way of approaching the learning experience making absorption of new information quick and enjoyable. Thank you.
Alvina Labsvirs, October 2016

A very simple but effective approach to navigation using contours only and incorporating other strategies to support this. I particularly enjoyed the discussions on movement and walking on different types of terrain and have started coaching pupils in my DofE groups these techniques with the aim to increasing their stamina on expeditions. Chris is clearly a knowledgeable and passionate mountaineer and is keen to support and encourage others. It was great discussing Chris' passion for other mountaineering areas outside the Lake District such as Skye and the Cairngorms.
Andrew Wilson, March 2017

I thoroughly enjoyed this day. The group size (6) was perfect and we all seemed to have very similar goals which was good. At the start of the day we were handed the contour map - which I initially found really disorientating! However, thanks to Chris's excellent teaching I soon began to make sense of it all - and to be honest, by the end of the day it seemed like a perfectly 'normal' map. The usual maps seemed ridiculously cluttered in comparison. Although we didn't cover a huge distance on our feet, we learned a lot, concentrating on the lie of the land around us at each small stage. Thank you Chris!
Kaye Cantlay, March 2017

This was like three CPD days in one, with a little of movement on steep ground as well as flora and fauna, but neither of these detracted from the main focus of the day which was the excellent Contour Masterclass. In fact they were excellent distractions to make us constantly relocate! A brilliant day all round. I can't thank Chris enough - I have since been up in the central Highlands putting so much of what we learned on that day into practice. Thank you!
Euan Mackenzie, September 2017

I learnt a lot and feel far more confident about using those tiny bumps and blips on the map now!
Caroline Larkman, September 2017

Booking procedure was straight forward and the information and updates provided were excellent. The course programme covered everything I was looking for plus the added bonus of tips on movement. I shall never walk the same way again! Initially, looking at a map with just contours marked was daunting but by the end of the day I felt I had a significant addition to improving my navigation skills. It was a pleasure to spend the day with Chris. His easy relaxed manner made it a great learning experience and I have taken so many tips from the day that I can work on leading up to the ML assessment.
Ian Barnes, September 2017

Chris was fantastic - a great wealth of knowledge and experience, and passing on useful information not only in navigation but with flora and movement as well.
Ross Gellatly, May 2018

Chris is a true professional who has mastered his craft to the highest level.
Mike Hide, May 2018

The programme was excellent, with plenty to challenge the mind and not just on the topic of the day but loads of other excellent feedback and knowledge dispensed. Straightforward and enlightening instruction at every given opportunity. I had a great fun but learnt loads at the same time and the criticism was great even though it hurt (to be made to stand straight !!). Well done Chris for highlighting it in such a constructive way . Thanks so much for a great day.
Stuart Bratton, August 2018

Quick communication and really helpful with letting me know about a cancellation place which had occurred and fitted with my availability. Excellent programme covering the aspects of steep ground and group management skills required by ML assessors. The course also included some additional information which is not required on ML assessment but would be useful for anyone out leading groups in the mountains to be aware of. A really enjoyable day out in the mountains. Chris is obviously extremely knowledgeable and experienced. He provided a wealth of information, he was patient and understanding that everyone learns differently when delivering the course content. He was also aware when brain saturation had occurred towards the end of the day. I really like the way Chris delivers his courses and was glad it was a small group which didn't require an additional instructor on the day. I love your dog!
Liane Shaw, March 2019

Very easy to book onto the class. Anne was very quick in responding to my emails and was always very pleasant and friendly. The day passed incredibly quickly as there was so much learning to be had from the extremely knowledgeable Chris. Lots of time for focused and also informal learning. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable in so many aspects of outdoor activities. He is friendly and makes you feel instantly welcome and part of the group. Thank you both for a wonderful experience!
Diane Fisher, September 2019

Thanks for a great day on the hill, all the additional coaching in movement and flora/ fauna was ace! I would love to go on another course in the future, just wish I lived closer.
Stuart Burns, November 2019

Movement Masterclasses

It became clear that when the ground got steeper or more difficult or where the consequences of falling were more serious, I unconsciously changed my stance, posture and technique for the worse and unwittingly made life much more difficult for myself. Chris introduced various concepts such as dynamic balance which made it much easier to travel over steeper ground more quickly, using less energy and with a lower likelihood of slipping. For the descent, most importantly for me, we looked at how to reduce stress on the knees. I have been a DofE Leader for nearly 10 years and I think this CPD day was very useful not only for me as an individual but for anyone who wants to pass on a love of walking and scrambling in the hills to others. I now have a lot to work on and I only wish the course had been longer than just one day.
Nigel Sharma, October 2015

An enormous thank you to Chris for an absolutely outstanding day.  I really enjoyed myself whilst learning so much.  Chris is delightfully provocative and encouraging, we all pushed our boundaries a little further out, a natural mentor through his boundless acronyms, anecdotes and little challenges, and his wisdom on the psychology and mechanics of movement has genuinely made me stop and rethink.  A fascinating subject demonstrated and delivered expertly through a gem of a workshop. Brilliant.
Simon Carter, May 2017

Just a quick word of thanks for the movement coaching. It really came into its own throughout the West Highland Way. Whenever I found myself tiring it was just because I was not following the basic rules you drilled in - keeping the upper body steady, engaging core, using hips and moving quietly and strong. It is a continuous process of un-learning. Whenever I found myself doing something wrong, particularly in descent, I'd imagine the rocks on the back of my hand - and that sorted it all out. Since we were walking with a group, I actually found it quite disturbing how noisily others were walking, which made me even more determined to pad along quietly. It also made me very confident in my new abilities when it came to very broken and steep ground in the final 6 or 7km of Loch Lomond - none of it particularly consequential, but infinitely more sure and pleasurable when moving correctly. So thank you Chris - you have made my walking and leading a much more enjoyable process.
Craig Sawyers, October 2017

A very enjoyable day, lots to learn and practice.
Ian Fogg, May 2018

The course covered all the topics I expected and helped me to identify the areas I need to focus on in order to improve my own performance. Chris was excellent - just as I've come to expect. I felt confident, from past experience, that Chris' coaching would be beneficial to me and, so far as I'm aware, the course is unique. A really worthwhile day for me; despite my expectations I achieved a noticeable improvement in my descending technique.
Geoff Lyons, September 2019

All the required information is on the website with easy access to links. The programme was excellent, starting with general movement on easy ground and building up through the day. I’ve been out with Chris numerous times now and I’m always amazed at how enthusiastic, knowledgeable and happy to engage he is. Give it a go - you’ll be amazed at what you learn.
Phil Brown, September 2019

I booked with you because I have never seen this content elsewhere. The content of the course seems relevant to all aspects of mountaineering. In my feedback to the Mountain Training Association, I have said that I think it should be included in the Mountain Leader syllabus.
Peter Lovatt, September 2019

A lot was covered during the day, focusing on moving more efficiently over mountainous terrain and reducing the risk of injury. I have lots of go away and practice now! I'm sure that in the long term when I've perfected the various techniques taught, it will mean that I'm able to cover the ground much faster and end the day feeling less tired. Chris was an excellent coach, first establishing what we hoped to get out of the day, then tailoring the tuition to our needs, and ending the day with a useful re-cap of what we had learned. He was good company out on the hill, and made the day fun too!

Mountain Leader Steep Ground Masterclasses

Brilliant course and perfect recap of rope work and steep ground assurance ahead of ML assessments. Would also be a great refresher course for people who have already done their ML. Instructors were very good :)
John Robertson, April 2017

I found the teaching in the steep ground workshop to be extremely insightful. Chris has clearly spent a long time thinking about how to teach this topic and it was taught excellently. Very informative and enjoyable session.
Joe Rudin, September 2017

Chris is lucky to have you, Anne :) Best admin I have received from an outdoor provider. Chris imparted so much additional info above and beyond the course syllabus. He is so positive and enthusiastic about teaching and coaching. I learnt so much more than I thought I would. Consecutive days for two masterclasses made it worth the drive.
Rob Waitt, March 2018

I liked the tone of your website. It gives the impression that you care about giving great training and inspiring people...... and Chris does exactly that!
Elizabeth Brown, May 2018

As always, a fantastic course, the instruction and content were just what I needed to refresh rope work prior to assessment.
Ross Gellatly, August 2018

The enquiry and booking procedure was simple and effective, with good, clear email communications beforehand. The programme was challenging but in a good way. Interesting insights with focus on requirements for the Mpuntain Leader assessment (with every group member yet to undertake their assessment). Felt that Chris would happily change content to meet the needs/requirements of the participants. Chris is highly experienced, friendly and honest. He gave clear instructions and constructive feedback throughout the day, and built knowledge, understanding and confidence through the course. I have already recommended Chris to some friends looking at doing their Lowland Leader award and others interested in the Masterclasses.
Michael Stones, September 2018

Inspirational teaching of the subject matter, but also inspiring to see Chris working as a teacher and coach.
Richard Archer, March 2019

Thank you for a absolutely great couple of days covering a massive technical amount of ground in a easy, fun and pragmatic way for me to remember. Meeting up with other like minded people was fantastic and a few laughs along the way, although switching into the seriousness of what we were undertaking was never too far away.
It was also good to meet up with a group member who will be with me on the Mountain Leader assessment - this was a bit of an icebreaker and it was interesting to hear we are both feeling the same anticipation about the assessment week. What I really take away from the courses that I have been on with Chris is to share his knowledge with my groups that I go into the mountains with to help them. A simple one with my son was he kept suffering with severe cramp and after looking at his walking style on steep ground and making a few adjustments it was a complete game changer for him (e,g one of these being to stop walking on the balls of his feet on steep ground). Keep up your incredible work

Scrambling Masterclass

I very much want to thank Chris for an excellent workshop. Certainly the weather gave us a splendid day. However, it was Chris's excellent guidance, clarity of delivery and fresh ideas that really made the day. The ideas on gauging the ability of an individual early on in a venture is obvious, but the methods Chris offered were useful, applicable and realistic. I was also very impressed by Chris's questioning attitude. Effectively evaluating what we do in leading in the mountains is essential if we are to ensure that clients are challenged and enjoy themselves. The manner in which I look at walking and the process of doing it will never be the same again and I hope to be able to spend more time in Chris's company in the future as I know I will learn a huge amount. Many thanks and very best wishes.
Paul Davies, September 2015

All enquiry emails were replied to promptly and with all the information required. The booking procedure was very simple and easy to use, with an extra date added in order to facilitate me doing the course which was very much appreciated. The day was very well structured, Chris had a very good plan and was gave a lot of very good instruction from the moment we started walking right until the end of the day. Chris was excellent, he really made me think about my movement when walking as well as when climbing. Every bit of information was pitched at the right time, making me think about the best way of operating when scrambling and why. I would now definitely use you for other courses in the future.
Richard Warley, June 2016

The day was dictated by the clients' needs. This meant that the day was varied and relevant to the needs of the group. Everything was linked which made for an enjoyable and progressive day packed full of useful and usable tips and tricks. I finished the course confident in my existing skills and armed with lots of new skills to expand my knowledge and experience in the hills. Enjoyed the day and highly recommend it.
Alan McGing, May 2018

The programme was structured really well. We started with the basics of movement, then progressed logically from offering support to using the rope. Chris is a great instructor with a really warm manner. He clearly enjoys passing on his knowledge and was able to differentiate the session for the varying levels of experience and competence.
Michael Daley, May 2018

Any enquiries I made were answered swiftly and provided all of the info I’d requested. Chris was unbelievably accommodating and flexible around the dates of this workshop - I was highly impressed. The programme was excellent. As I was attending a scrambling workshop I obviously expected to be scrambling! However what I didn’t expect was the movement skills that Chris began the day with. I’ve been mountaineering for 30 years so assumed I knew how to walk across rocky terrain. Think again. I learned so much in the first hour or so that it’s changed the way I move around the mountains. Chris is such an approachable person. I never felt that any question I had would be deemed stupid. He obviously has an amazing wealth of experience and clearly wants to share that with his clients - a brilliant and natural tutor. Book with Chris - you won’t be disappointed.
Ray Horncastle, June 2018

The programme was dictated by the group who each had areas they wished to look at / develop in. Chris always gives great instruction. Questions are welcomed and are answered immediately. I attended the Winter Scrambling Masterclass earlier in the year and learnt lots of different skills on both days. So even if you’ve had some previous training I would highly recommend Chris’s range of Masterclasses as a way of learning new skills and consolidating old ones.

Rock Climbing Instructor courses

A big thank you for the SPA training. I will certainly come to you for an assessment - you can bank on excellent recommendations from me!
Kevin White, Single Pitch Award training, May 2009

Thanks again for an unforgettable couple of days - taken in so much, learned loads and had fun to boot.
Sean Turner, Single Pitch Award training, May 2009

More than I could possibly have anticipated. I came away learning so much and realising I knew so little. Fantastic instruction over a wealth of topics not just specifically related to the SPA. Chris gave his time and experience very generously and freely, far more than I feel was required by the assessment. A fantastic two days which feels like a weeks worth of activity. That has to be good value. Chris's knowledge and experience was exceptional and his generosity with it was inspiring. The assessment was far beyond any expectation I had. Brilliant.
John Deakin, Single Pitch Award assessment, November 2014

I didn't just go through assessment, I almost feel I learnt more bonus material on assessment then I did on training with a different provider. This was the only course that fit in with my work schedule, I knew nothing of Chris before this course, it was a lucky chance and I will recommend to others.
Oli Martin, Single Pitch Award assessment, April 2016

Although the course was initially booked up, I received an email saying the course had been extended to 8 people. All emailing back and forth was very friendly and professional, payment was very easy and other information was received in plenty of time. All aspects of the syllabus was covered in a very comfortable and relaxing way. I have known Chris for a little while now and despite knowing other providers, Chris seemed the best choice by far.
Ashlea Bennett, Single Pitch Award assessment, April 2016

I thought Chris was great. He was an inspiring person to spend 2 days with. He was clear about what he wanted, extremely friendly and encouraging. For me, he made the assessment a really enjoyable 2 days, I learnt a lot and felt like Chris really cared about what he was doing. I was recommended to do my assessment with Chris from several people, all saying that he was the best instructor that they had either worked with or been trained/assessed by. Thank you for being inspiring, positive and encouraging. You have changed how I view assessments and I am now really excited to take the next steps.
Alice Kerr, Single Pitch Award assessment, October 2016

While it definitely felt like an assessment, it also didn't  - there were times where it felt like a group of climbers at the crag for a day's climbing, and at the same time there was lots of learning as well, not just from Chris but from each other as well. Chris was brilliant, couldn't fault him at all, really relaxed but at the same time on it as well, always got lots of suggestions on how to improve things that were really useful. I look forward to doing some other things with him. I had lots of recommendations from other previous clients who recommended you, really wish I had known sooner than I did as I would have done other courses with you.
Nathan Hughes, Single Pitch Award assessment, April 2017

Chris's laid back approach takes away the feeling of being assessed, creating a constant learning environment. What a great course, I have come from a military background where in some cases the adventure training instruction is very prescriptive and there at times can be very much a “right or wrong” attitude. As soon as I met Chris he put me at ease, even though you are being assessed it felt just as if I was spending a weekend with some friends climbing. If you did something differently, providing it was safe and you could justify it, Chris would give you a thumbs up. The whole course was a learning experience not only in the many new things we taught each other but constant thought provoking observations from Chris.
Lee Payne, Single Pitch Award assessment, June 2017

Chris and Colin were amazing during the assessment, they showed encouragement and even when things didn't go to plan they were supportive and understanding and at no point made me feel under pressure. I was still able to learn so much on my assessment and have the opportunity to put what I had learnt into practice over the 2 days that I feel I have come away from my assessment with a lot more than just my qualification, and look forward to implementing what I have learnt into my future climbing and working adventures. Thank you again to Colin for being so supportive towards me when it seemed everything had gone wrong and reminding me that not everything will go to plan when you're an instructor - its how you deal with it that counts.
Serena Neale,
Single Pitch Award assessment, March 2018

I booked with Chris because I had heard a lot of good things about him, I also have done the majority of my qualifications with the same provider and wanted to experience a different view point. This was also very helpful as Chris is the first British Mountain Guide I have worked with and this perspective really made me look at what I do and why I do it that way.
Richard Collingwood, Rock Climbing Instructor assessment, May 2018

Chris was absolutely fantastic! With him sharing his incredible knowledge and experience throughout the whole course, it felt more like a training course than an assessment as I learnt so much from it! I cannot praise Chris any higher, superb!
Ian Doctor, Rock Climbing Instructor assessment, May 2018

Chris is an extremely knowledgeable instructor with a wealth of real experience in the subjects. His feedback was positive and useful and made the assessment process feel really relaxed. I feel I came out of the assessment knowing more than when I began.
